It is estimated that in the beginning of the 20th century, over 10,000 tigers roamed throughout most of Asia, from the shores of the Caspian sea to far-eastern Siberia and down through the Indonesian islands till Bali. Out of the original eight species of tigers, only five still exist, the other three being extinct, thanks to incessant killing by ruthless poachers. Currently, the total number of tigers in the wild, is estimated to range as low as 5,000 to a maximum of 7,000.The WWF believes that up to 1,000 tigers per year are being killed by poachers, although it is difficult to accurately account for numbers in this illegal trade. However, at any rate of extermination, these majestic felines are on a tailspin dive toward extinction.

Various WILDLIFE and TIGER Foundations have taken the viewpoint that conservation of all five subspecies of tigers in the wild is of the topmost priority. Since humans are single-handedly responsible for the sorry situation that these "Rajah's of the Jungle" are facing, it is only right on our part to take on the moral responsibility of preserving and protecting the few tigers that remain in the wild. This is a gargantuan task and will require large sums of money to make a material contribution towards saving tigers in the wild. The challenge is made evident when one takes into consideration the vast territorial needs of even a single tiger(sometimes the territory cordoned off by a single tiger can cover upto 100 sq. miles),the difficult environment in which they live and their highly elusive nature. Tigers are highly mobile and require a specific combination of suitable habitat and sustainable food source, both of which are severely threatened in every single environment in which tigers are present.
